What are rapid prototyping services?

Rapid Prototype, is often made quickly using plastic/metal material in a low-cost way, is used for testing and validating the products before opening molds for mass production.
Usually, when the designers develop or design the products, they need to make some prototypes to verify the feasibility of the products, which is an effective way to find the product design defects, deficiencies, etc, and then make targeted improvements.

What is rapid tooling?

Rapid Tooling is a way to simplify the mold structure for low cost & short lead-time. It’s commonly used in
the field of rapid injection molding, based on the low-volume requirement. Nice Rapid manufactures its own
rapid tooling in 7075 aluminum(molds can be textured) and pre-hardened P20 tool steel, to make the cavity,
core, and ejector plates. They are then fitted into a Master Unit Die(MUD-based system) with standard tooling
components, in order to produce injection molded parts.

Rapid Tooling vs Conventional Tooling?

Rapid aluminum tooling is very suitable for low-volume production prototype runs, providing a cost-effective solution
with a shorter lead-time than traditional production tooling. For rapid tooling, we can typically be 40%
cheaper than full production tooling, with a 50% reduction in lead-time compared to traditional molds.
Typically, we are able to go from initial DFM design through to tooling manufacture, mold flow analysis, and
initial samples in approximately 6 to 27calendar days(depending on product complexity and tool functionality).

What metal materials are used for rapid tooling?

We manufacture our tools from aluminum, P20, NAK80, and S136 tool steel, which can be run in a standard
injection molding machine to produce production-quality parts in low volumes. These molds are
generally serviceable for 5000 to 100,000+ units(depending on tool steel type, prototype material, and tool
If a part requires a normal surface finish, we use aluminum or P20 steel in the injection molding process.
If a gloss or clear finish is required, the mold material would consist of NAK80 or S136, which are types
of polishing steel.

Type of rapid prototyping services YS offer:

  1. Plastic prototypes: The main material is plastic, mainly used for plastic products prototyping, processing by rapid CNC machining,3D printing, vacuum casting, etc.

  2. Rubber silicone prototypes are mainly manufactured by vacuum casting, and rubber molding or silicone molding.

  3. Metal prototypes. The common material is aluminum, brass, stainless steel, etc., which are usually for some high-end prototypes, such as laptops, MP3, Vending machines, etc. Metal prototypes can be manufactured by CNC milling, CNC turning, sheet metal forming, etc.
