Engineering Review Before Machining
A 3D model defines the shape of a component, but it does not always explain how the part should function, fit with other components, or be inspected.
Before production, our technical team reviews the geometry, drawing notes, material, tolerances, surface finish, and intended application. We pay particular attention to:
- Critical dimensions and mating features
- Precision holes and bearing seats
- Features located across different faces
- Thin walls and areas at risk of deformation
- Deep cavities and restricted tool access
- Threads and precision surfaces
- Coating allowance and masking areas
- Practical inspection methods
This review is particularly important for complex custom CNC parts. A component may appear straightforward in a CAD model but still require careful planning because of deep pockets, multiple setups, long-reach tooling, thin sections, or limited clamping areas.
If we identify an unclear dimension, a difficult-to-inspect feature, or a possible conflict between machining and surface finishing, we discuss it with the customer before production. Resolving these points early helps reduce revisions, rejected parts, and assembly problems.
Custom CNC Milling
Our custom CNC milling service supports housings, frames, mounting plates, fixtures, brackets, manifolds, equipment bases, and other precision components.
Depending on the part geometry, we use 3-axis, 4-axis, or 5-axis CNC machining to produce features across multiple surfaces. Multi-axis machining is particularly suitable for components with angled holes, complex contours, deep profiles, or closely related features on several faces.
Typical features include precision bores, locating holes, pockets, slots, threads, angled surfaces, curved profiles, and thin-wall structures.
For complex parts, accuracy depends on more than the tolerance of an individual dimension. Datum selection, workholding, machining sequence, tool access, and the relationship between features all influence whether the finished component will assemble and function correctly.

CNC Turning and Turn-Mill Machining
YS Precision also manufactures custom CNC turned parts such as shafts, bushings, sleeves, pins, spacers, threaded fittings, and connectors.
When a turned component also includes milled flats, cross holes, slots, or off-center features, turn-mill machining can combine turning and milling in one coordinated process. This helps maintain the relationship between turned diameters and milled features while reducing unnecessary part transfers.
The manufacturing method is selected according to the component’s size, geometry, material, tolerances, and order quantity. We support both prototype quantities and repeat production of precision CNC turned parts.

Material behavior is considered when planning each machining process.
Thin aluminum parts may deform if they are clamped too heavily or machined in the wrong sequence. Stainless steel requires appropriate cutting parameters to manage heat and tool wear. Engineering plastics require attention to internal stress, heat generation, burrs, and dimensional movement.
For expensive materials such as PEEK, PEI, or titanium, we review stock preparation, workholding, and machining sequence carefully to reduce unnecessary material loss.

Precision and Tolerance Control
Our general CNC machining capability can commonly achieve tolerances around ±0.01 mm. Selected critical features may be controlled to ±0.005 mm when the geometry, material, part size, machining conditions, and measurement method allow.
However, applying extremely tight tolerances across an entire drawing can increase machining and inspection costs without improving the performance of the part.
We recommend clearly identifying dimensions that affect:
- Assembly and alignment
- Hole, shaft, and bearing fits
- Mechanical movement
- Sealing surfaces
- Flatness and parallelism
- Optical or mechanical positioning
- Interchangeability between batches
These functional requirements are considered when planning workholding, tooling, machining sequence, and inspection.
From CNC Prototypes to Repeat Production
Many custom parts change between the first prototype and final production.
Initial CNC machined prototypes may be used to evaluate fit, movement, appearance, strength, or assembly. Testing may reveal that a hole position, wall thickness, clearance, surface finish, or tolerance needs adjustment.
YS Precision supports the project through drawing review, prototype machining, customer testing, design revisions, low-volume production, and repeat orders.
The manufacturing experience gained during prototyping can then be carried into later production. Proven workholding methods, machining sequences, inspection points, and finishing requirements do not have to be developed again when the order quantity increases.
For projects involving several mating components, we can manufacture the related parts together and perform fit or trial-assembly checks before shipment when the required components are available.
Surface Finishing and Secondary Operations
Custom CNC machined parts can be supplied unfinished or with coordinated secondary processing, including:
- Clear, black, colored, and hard-coat anodizing
- Fine bead blasting
- Polishing
- Powder coating and wet painting
- Passivation
- Chemical conversion coating
- Zinc plating and other metal plating

Surface treatment is considered during machining preparation. Precision bores, threaded holes, electrical contact areas, and mating surfaces may require masking or dimensional compensation for coating thickness.
For appearance-sensitive housings and visible components, we also consider tool marks, blasting consistency, color requirements, handling protection, and packaging. Parts can be separated or packed with protective materials to reduce scratches during transportation.

Quality control begins by confirming the drawing revision, material, and technical requirements. It continues through machining, surface finishing, final inspection, and packing.
