Quality Control for Custom Parts

Quality control begins before production, not after the parts are finished. An unclear datum, unsuitable material or undefined surface finish can create problems even when the manufacturing process itself is stable.

At YS Precision, quality management is integrated into drawing review, material confirmation, production, surface finishing, final inspection and packaging. The inspection plan is adapted to the part, process, quantity and agreed requirements rather than applying the same checklist to every project.

Quality Planning Before Production

Before material is ordered or tooling begins, we review the available 2D drawings, 3D CAD files, specifications, samples and assembly information. Critical features and inspection requirements are identified so that production and quality control follow the same technical basis.

The review may cover:

Drawing revision, units and material requirements

General and critical tolerances

Datums and relationships between mating features

Threads, inserts and sealing surfaces

Cosmetic surfaces and finishing requirements

Inspection methods for critical dimensions

Packaging and handling requirements

If a requirement is incomplete, contradictory or difficult to verify, we clarify it with the customer before production. This helps prevent avoidable rework caused by different interpretations of the same drawing.

Material and In-Process Checks

Incoming material is checked against the project requirement before use. Depending on the order, this may include confirming the material designation, dimensions, quantity, appearance and available supplier documentation. When certificates or additional traceability are required, these requirements should be confirmed during quotation or order review.

First-part inspection helps verify the production setup, tooling, workholding and measurement method before the rest of the batch proceeds. In-process checks are then performed at appropriate stages according to the tolerance, process stability and order quantity.

Typical checks may include:

Overall dimensions and feature positions

Hole diameters, depths, heights and steps

Outside diameters and thicknesses

Threads and tapped holes

Mating relationships and alignment

Burrs, surface condition and visible damage

For molded, cast or sheet metal parts, inspection may also address deformation, flash, sink marks, weld condition and other process-specific characteristics.

Dimensional Inspection Equipment

Measurement equipment is selected according to the feature, tolerance and part geometry.

Digital Calipers and Micrometers

Digital calipers are used for general external, internal, step and depth measurements where appropriate. Micrometers provide finer measurement for outside diameters, thicknesses and other precision dimensions.

Height Gauges

Height gauges are used on a reference surface to inspect heights, steps and selected relationships between features. They are particularly useful when several dimensions are controlled from a common datum.

2D Vision Measuring System

Our 2D vision measuring equipment supports non-contact inspection of profiles, hole positions, diameters, radii, angles and other visible features. Magnified edge detection is useful for small or delicate features that may be difficult to check reliably with handheld instruments.

Surface Finishing and Appearance Control

Finished parts are checked against the approved specification or reference where available. Inspection may cover finish type, color, consistency, scratches, dents, stains, protected areas and marking position.

For anodizing, plating, painting, powder coating and other finishing processes managed as part of the project, we communicate the approved requirements to the relevant production supplier and inspect the finished parts when they return.

Fit Checking and Final Inspection

When several mating parts are manufactured together, we can perform fit checks or light trial assembly according to the project requirements. This can identify obvious issues involving hole alignment, mating diameters, inserts, fasteners or component interference before shipment. It does not replace the customer’s final functional testing or product certification.

Before shipment, parts are checked against the latest approved drawing revision, quantity, finish and packaging requirements. Final inspection may combine dimensional measurement, visual examination, thread checks and project-specific verification.

Inspection records, dimensional results, material certificates or finish-related records can be prepared when agreed for the project. The required document type and inspection scope should be confirmed before production.

Managing Nonconforming Parts

If an issue is identified, the affected parts are separated while the cause and impact are reviewed. The response may involve additional inspection, process adjustment, rework, replacement or communication with the customer.

Where appropriate, the findings are also used to improve setup control, workholding, inspection frequency or handling methods for subsequent production.

Packaging and Shipment Protection

Quality control continues after inspection. Packaging is selected according to part size, weight, surface finish and transport method. Protective film, individual wrapping, dividers, trays, foam or reinforced cartons may be used where appropriate.

Quantities and labels are checked before dispatch so that acceptable parts remain protected through handling and international delivery.
