Producing a few good turned parts is one thing. Keeping the same dimensions stable across 5,000 stainless steel components is a different manufacturing challenge.

This custom turned part is produced for automation equipment and shipped to a customer in Italy. At approximately 80 × 45 mm, it combines a slender shaft, several stepped diameters and a larger end section with multiple circumferential features.

This is not a standard shaft or catalog component. It is manufactured to the customer's drawing, with the turned features produced around the actual fit and function required in the equipment.

 


 

Simple Geometry, but Repeatability Matters

Most of the part is rotational, making CNC turning the natural manufacturing process. What deserves attention is the relationship between the different turned sections.

The narrow shaft transitions through several diameters before reaching the larger end. Shoulders and circumferential features are positioned along the same machining axis. On an automation component, variation in shaft diameter, shoulder position or concentricity may affect how the part fits with bearings, sleeves, seals or other mating components.

For a single prototype, dimensions can be checked and adjusted individually. At 5,000 pieces, that is not an efficient production strategy.

The machining sequence, workholding, cutting tools and inspection points need to work together as a repeatable process.

 


 

Stainless Steel Turning Across 5,000 Pieces

Stainless steel is widely used in industrial equipment for its strength, durability and corrosion resistance, but it also brings practical machining considerations.

During a long stainless steel CNC turning run, heat, chip formation and gradual tool wear can influence dimensional stability and surface condition. A cutting insert that performs well at the beginning of production will not remain unchanged throughout thousands of machining cycles.

For this reason, we do not look only at the cycle time.

Tool condition and part measurements are monitored during production, while cutting parameters and tool replacement are managed according to the material, geometry and drawing requirements.

The aim is straightforward: establish a machining cycle that can remain controlled throughout the batch.

 


 

First-Piece and In-Process Inspection

Before continuous production, the first machined pieces are checked against the latest customer drawing.

Depending on the component, this may include shaft diameters, overall lengths, shoulder locations, grooves, threads and other critical or mating dimensions.

Once the setup is confirmed, selected features are checked during production. This helps identify dimensional trends caused by tool wear before they develop into a larger batch issue.

Our workflow combines first-piece verification, in-process inspection and outgoing inspection, with the actual inspection items determined by the drawing.

For a production manager sourcing thousands of custom CNC turned parts, this is often more meaningful than seeing one perfect sample—the complete batch has to remain usable.

Automation and industrial machinery use many components suited to CNC lathe machining, including:

Materials for Custom CNC Turning

Our turning capabilities cover both metals and engineering plastics.

Common materials include stainless steel 303, 304 and 316, aluminum alloys, brass, copper and carbon steel, as well as engineering plastics such as POM, PEEK, PTFE, Nylon and ABS.

Material, geometry, tolerances and order quantity are reviewed together when planning the machining route. A process that works well for ten aluminum prototypes is not necessarily the best approach for several thousand stainless steel production parts.

 


 

From Prototype to Repeat Production

Many production projects begin with a much smaller order.

Customers may initially need prototypes or a small batch for assembly and functional testing. Once the design is validated, the requirement can increase to hundreds or thousands of components.
