Product Description

Custom 303 Stainless Steel Lead Screw Machining for Automation Equipment

For a custom lead screw, overall length and diameter are only the starting point. The thread form, pitch, lead, threaded length and end geometry often determine how the part actually needs to be machined.

This custom 303 stainless steel lead screw is manufactured for automation equipment and supplied to a customer in the United States. The part is approximately 110 × 20 mm, with a production quantity of around 1,000 pieces.

Its defining feature is the long external thread running through most of the shaft, with smooth unthreaded sections remaining at both ends.

This is not a standard threaded rod cut to length. It is a made-to-drawing machined component, produced according to the customer's thread and shaft specifications.

Production Basis Customer 2D/3D Drawing + Thread Specification

For this type of part, two lead screws with the same outside dimensions can require very different machining processes. The thread specification tells us far more than the overall size alone.

On This Part, the Thread Is the Working Geometry

This is the key difference between a lead screw and many conventional threaded shafts.

On a typical threaded shaft, the thread may occupy only a short section at one end. Here, the external thread extends across most of the component's working length.

That makes the thread one of the first areas to review during manufacturing planning.

Depending on the design, the drawing may define:

  • Thread form
  • Major and minor diameter
  • Pitch
  • Lead
  • Number of starts
  • Threaded length
  • Fit or tolerance requirements
  • Thread start and end geometry

We do not assume that a part is an Acme, trapezoidal or another specific thread type from its appearance. The thread is machined according to the customer's actual specification.

Pitch and Lead Can Change the Part Completely

For buyers sourcing a custom lead screw, this distinction is worth getting right at the RFQ stage.

Pitch is the axial distance between adjacent thread forms. Lead is the distance the mating component advances during one complete revolution.

For a single-start thread, pitch and lead are equal. For a multi-start thread, they are different.

This matters because two screws with similar diameters can create very different motion depending on the lead and thread configuration.

If your design uses a non-standard thread, providing the thread form, pitch, lead and number of starts helps us evaluate tooling, machining strategy and inspection requirements before quotation.

The Unthreaded Ends Matter Too

The long thread naturally attracts attention, but the smooth cylindrical sections at both ends are also part of the finished component.

Depending on the assembly, these end sections may interface with other mechanical components or provide locating and support surfaces.

The lead screw therefore needs to be considered as a complete geometry:

End Section → Long Threaded Working Area → End Section

Where specified on the drawing, shaft diameters, shoulder positions, runout, concentricity or other relationships between the threaded and unthreaded sections can become part of the manufacturing requirements.

This is one reason customers choose custom lead screw machining rather than modifying standard threaded rod.

Why 303 Stainless Steel?

The specified material for this project is 303 stainless steel.

303 is commonly used for machined components because it offers improved machinability compared with many other austenitic stainless steels. This can be beneficial for a part with a substantial external threaded section and additional turned shaft features.

For approximately 1,000 pieces, material machinability can also affect tool performance, cycle time and production efficiency.

However, easier machining does not automatically make 303 the correct choice for every lead screw. Load, wear, corrosion environment and other application requirements also matter.

We manufacture according to the material grade specified by the customer.

From a Drawing to 1,000 Lead Screws

A custom thread may be achievable on one sample, but repeat production introduces a different question: can the process reproduce the required geometry throughout the batch?

A typical route for a component like this may include:

Material Preparation → Shaft Turning → External Thread Machining → End Machining → Deburring → Inspection → Cleaning → Packing

The exact process depends on the thread specification and drawing.

For a 1,000-piece production run, tooling and process stability become increasingly relevant as machining continues.

Inspection also follows the drawing rather than a generic checklist. Depending on the functional requirements, this may include specified thread characteristics, shaft diameters, overall length and relationships between the threaded section and end features.

Custom Lead Screw Machining to Your Specification

YS Precision provides custom lead screw machining and precision CNC turning services for automation equipment and industrial machinery.

We manufacture made-to-drawing components with features such as:

  • Long external threads
  • Custom thread profiles
  • Drawing-specific pitch and lead
  • Single- or multi-start threads when specified
  • Smooth end journals or locating sections
  • Stepped shaft ends
  • Shoulders and grooves
  • Additional machined end features
  • Custom lengths and diameters

Depending on the design, manufacturing can involve CNC turning, CNC lathe machining, external thread machining, Swiss-type CNC turning, turn-mill machining and secondary CNC operations.

We support prototypes, low-volume orders and repeat production in stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, brass and other machinable materials.

What Should Be Included in a Lead Screw RFQ?

If you are comparing a custom lead screw manufacturer or precision machining supplier, sending complete thread information can make the quotation more useful from the beginning.

For a manufacturing review, provide:

  • 2D drawing and/or 3D model
  • Material grade
  • Overall length
  • End-shaft diameters
  • Thread form
  • Major/minor diameter
  • Pitch
  • Lead
  • Number of starts, if applicable
  • Threaded length
  • Critical tolerances
  • Runout or concentricity requirements, if applicable
  • Surface finish
  • Order quantity
  • Inspection requirements

If the lead screw works with a specific nut or mating component, relevant fit information can also help clarify the functional requirements.

Send your lead screw drawing and thread specifications to YS Precision for a custom machining review and production quotation.
