Product Description

303 Stainless Steel CNC Shaft Turning for Medical Equipment

Long shafts need a different turning strategy from short pins, bushings or fittings.
This custom 303 stainless steel CNC turned shaft is manufactured for a medical equipment application and supplied to a customer in Germany. The part measures approximately 200 × 50 mm, with a production quantity of around 1,000 pieces.
Several diameters run along the same axis, from the smaller stepped sections at each end to the much larger center body. The center section also carries pronounced knurled or textured areas together with longitudinal features.
It is a good example of the non-standard shaft work we handle through our precision CNC turning services—where the challenge comes not from one isolated feature, but from keeping a long, multi-diameter component under control from end to end.

Production is based on the customer's 2D and 3D drawings. Diameters, shoulder positions, surface features and other functional dimensions follow the engineering specification.

Turning 200 mm Along the Same Axis

Length is one of the first things we consider when reviewing this part.
At approximately 200 mm, several smaller-diameter sections extend away from the larger center body. Compared with a short, rigid turned component, these sections can be more sensitive to cutting forces during machining.
For CNC shaft machining and precision turning, workholding, support, tool engagement and operation sequence need to suit the proportions of the actual workpiece.
The objective is not simply to machine one diameter correctly and move to the next.
All of the diameters, shoulders and transitions still belong to the same shaft. The machining process has to maintain the relationships defined along its full length.

A Stepped Shaft Is More Than a List of Diameters

Most of the basic profile is naturally suited to CNC lathe machining.
The component contains several typical turning features:

  • Multiple outside diameters
  • Stepped sections
  • Shoulders
  • End faces
  • Diameter transitions
  • Recessed areas

What matters is how these features relate to one another.
A particular diameter may locate the shaft in an assembly. A shoulder may control its axial position. The distance between two steps may be more important than either feature considered on its own.
For custom shaft machining, these relationships come from the drawing and influence both the machining sequence and inspection plan.

The Center Body Changes the Job

The larger center section is the most distinctive part of this component.
Instead of a continuous smooth diameter, it contains clearly visible knurled or textured areas, including patterned bands near the shoulders and a broader textured region along the body. Longitudinal features also interrupt the otherwise rotational surface.
These details need to be considered separately from standard OD turning.
We would not assign a knurl pattern, pitch, depth or function from the photograph alone. Those requirements must come from the customer's engineering drawing.
Depending on the final feature definitions, the production route may combine:
CNC Turning → Step Turning → Center-Body Machining → Knurling / Surface Feature Machining → Secondary CNC Machining → Deburring → Inspection
Turning remains the main process. Additional operations are introduced only where the geometry calls for them.

303 Stainless Steel on a Long Turning Job

303 stainless steel is well suited to CNC turning and offers relatively good machinability among austenitic stainless steels.
For a long stepped component like this, however, successful stainless steel CNC turning depends on more than material machinability alone.
The cutting conditions change along the profile. Tool engagement on a smaller shaft diameter is different from machining the much larger center body, and the textured areas introduce another operation into the cycle.
The machining parameters and tooling therefore need to suit both the material and the changing geometry.
We also follow the specified material grade directly. 303, 304 and 316 stainless steels are not treated as interchangeable simply because they belong to the same material family.

Which Dimensions Actually Matter to the Assembly?

A maximum envelope of 200 × 50 mm is useful for evaluating machine capacity, but it says little about how the component functions.
The drawing may identify a critical outside diameter, a shoulder location, a distance between two steps, or a relationship between different sections of the shaft.
Those are the dimensions that influence process planning.
Before machining, we review which features control fit, location and assembly, then consider how they should be established and maintained through the turning sequence.
This is especially useful for custom CNC turned parts where several functional surfaces are spread across a relatively long component.

From the First Part to a 1,000-Piece Run

This project involves approximately 1,000 finished parts.
Once the process has been established, it needs to remain practical through the production run.
For this shaft, repeatability depends on consistent workholding across the long stepped profile, suitable tooling for the changing diameters, and reliable positioning of the additional surface features.
Inspection follows the drawing rather than applying the same level of control to every dimension. Features identified as important to fit or assembly receive the attention they require.
For repeat production, a stable machining route is more valuable than an unnecessarily complicated one.

Looking for a CNC Turning Supplier for Custom Shafts?

When sourcing a CNC turning supplier for a non-standard shaft, overall diameter and length are only the starting point.
For this 303 stainless steel component, the machining requirement comes from the combination of its 200 mm length, multiple stepped diameters, larger center body and additional textured features.
A complete engineering drawing allows us to review those details together before deciding how the shaft should be held, turned and finished.
If you are sourcing a similar custom turned shaft or stainless steel CNC turned part, send us the 2D/3D drawings, material specification and required quantity. We can review the geometry and determine a practical machining route for prototype or production requirements.
YS Precision provides CNC shaft turning and precision CNC lathe machining for made-to-print components, from straightforward turned shafts to longer parts with multiple diameters and secondary features.
