Product Description

C3604 Brass CNC Turning and Milling Parts for Marine Equipment

This custom C3604 brass component is manufactured for marine equipment and supplied to a customer in Germany. The part is approximately 50 × 50 × 20 mm, with several critical dimensions controlled to ±0.01 mm. The production quantity is around 10,000 pieces per batch.
Its geometry is mainly rotational, but the part also includes additional face features that cannot be completed by turning alone. The outside profile, stepped diameters and central bore are produced by CNC turning, while the remaining features require drilling or milling.
For this combination of geometry, tolerance and quantity, CNC turning and milling provides a more practical manufacturing route than treating each process separately.

This is a made-to-drawing component rather than a standard brass fitting. The machining route is defined by the actual drawing, the critical dimensions and the expected production volume.

Why Turning Alone Is Not Enough

The round features make CNC turning the obvious starting point.
The outside diameter, stepped sections and central bore can all be generated around a common centerline. The additional features on the front face, however, require another machining direction.
For a small prototype order, transferring parts between separate operations may not be a major issue. For 10,000 pieces, every additional loading and locating step is repeated thousands of times.
That affects more than cycle time.
Each extra setup means the part has to be located again, which can introduce additional variation between the turned features and the secondary-machined features.
A well-planned turn-mill machining process can reduce unnecessary transfers and create a more stable production sequence.

Why C3604 Brass Is a Good Fit for This Project

C3604 is a free-machining brass commonly used for precision machined components.
Its machinability makes it suitable for repeat production because it generally offers:

  • Good chip control
  • Efficient cutting
  • Stable surface quality
  • Lower cutting resistance than many stainless steels
  • Good suitability for turned and drilled features

These characteristics are useful when the order quantity reaches thousands of pieces.
Even so, brass CNC machining still requires attention to tooling, burr formation, workholding and dimensional consistency. A material that machines easily can still produce inconsistent parts if the production process is poorly planned.
For this reason, tooling and cutting parameters are selected with the complete batch in mind rather than only the first few pieces.

Holding ±0.01 mm on Critical Dimensions

Several key features on this component are specified to ±0.01 mm.
Before the full batch is released, initial machined parts are checked against the latest customer drawing. Particular attention is given to dimensions that affect fit, location or assembly.
During production, selected features are measured at appropriate intervals.
This allows dimensional changes caused by tool wear or process variation to be identified while machining is still underway.
Our inspection workflow includes first-piece verification, in-process inspection and outgoing inspection, with the actual measurement items based on the customer's drawing.
For a 10,000-piece order, the objective is not to make one perfect sample. The real requirement is to keep the important dimensions controlled throughout the batch.

Production Efficiency Becomes More Important at Higher Quantities

The best machining method for ten prototypes is not always the best method for 10,000 production parts.
At higher quantities, small inefficiencies become significant.
An extra loading step, repeated repositioning, unnecessary machine transfers or poorly planned secondary operations can add considerable time across the complete order.
Before production, we therefore look at the component as a full machining sequence:

  • Which features should establish the primary datum?
  • Which features are best completed during turning?
  • Which require milling or drilling?
  • Can a setup or transfer be eliminated?
  • Which dimensions need closer inspection during the run?

This is where CNC turning and milling can add real value. The goal is not simply to use a more advanced machine, but to create a simpler and more repeatable route from raw material to finished part.

Custom CNC Turned Parts for Marine and Industrial Equipment

YS Precision manufactures custom CNC turned parts based on customer 2D drawings and 3D models.
Typical parts include:

  • Precision shafts
  • Bushings and sleeves
  • Pins and spacers
  • Threaded components
  • Brass fittings and connectors
  • Mechanical hardware
  • Turn-mill components
  • Parts with holes, flats or milled features

Depending on the geometry and quantity, production may involve precision CNC turning, CNC lathe machining, Swiss-type CNC turning, CNC turning and milling, or secondary CNC machining.
The process is selected around the part rather than forcing every rotational component through the same production route.

CNC Turning in Brass and Other Materials

In addition to C3604 brass, our CNC turning services cover a range of metals and engineering plastics.
Common metals include brass, stainless steel 303/304/316, aluminum alloys, copper and carbon steel.
We also machine engineering plastics such as POM, PEEK, PTFE, Nylon and ABS.
Material, geometry, tolerances and production quantity are reviewed together when planning the machining route.
For customers sourcing several different components for one project, this also allows different materials and machining methods to be coordinated within the same supply chain.

From RFQ to Repeat Production

Most custom machining projects begin with a drawing.
For quotation and manufacturing review, customers can provide:

  • 2D drawing and/or 3D model
  • Material grade
  • Required quantity
  • Critical tolerances
  • Surface finish requirements
  • Expected repeat or annual demand

Our engineering team reviews the geometry before production and identifies the features that will drive the machining process.
For turn-mill parts, that often means deciding which features should be completed during turning, which require secondary machining and where unnecessary setups can be reduced.
We support prototypes, small batches and repeat production, so customers can continue with the same machining supplier as demand develops.
For repeat orders, production follows the latest drawing revision and confirmed manufacturing requirements.
