Product Description

Aluminum 6061 Knurled CNC Turned Parts for Medical Equipment

Small turned parts are often simple in size, but not necessarily simple to produce in volume.

This custom Aluminum 6061 knurled CNC turned part is manufactured as hardware for medical equipment and supplied to a customer in Italy. The component is approximately 30 × 6 mm, with production quantities of around 30,000 pieces per batch.

The most distinctive feature is the extensive diamond-knurled surface. A long knurled section covers much of the main body, with another textured area near the stepped end. Smooth turned diameters and transitions complete the remaining profile.

For a production order of this size, the focus is not only dimensional accuracy. Knurl consistency, tool life, cycle efficiency and stable repeat production all become part of the machining plan.

The part is manufactured to the customer's drawing. Turned diameters, shoulders, knurled areas and any additional machined features follow the specified geometry rather than a standard catalog design.

Knurling Is a Major Feature on This Part

On many CNC turned components, knurling occupies only a narrow grip area. Here, it covers a substantial portion of the component.

That changes how the feature needs to be considered during manufacturing.

A customer drawing for a custom knurled part may define the knurl pattern, pitch, length and finished diameter. The position of the knurl relative to adjacent shoulders or smooth sections may also matter.

Typical information we look for includes:

  • Diamond or straight knurl
  • Knurl pitch
  • Knurled length
  • Finished outside diameter
  • Location along the turned profile
  • Surface appearance requirements

Providing these details at the RFQ stage helps us evaluate the tooling and production method more accurately.

The Challenge Is Repeating the Knurl 30,000 Times

A good first sample is only the beginning of a production project.

With approximately 30,000 parts per batch, knurling tool condition becomes increasingly important. As tooling accumulates production time, wear can influence pattern definition and finished dimensions.

The process therefore needs to account for the condition of the knurling tool, engagement with the workpiece, part support and appropriate tool-change intervals.

The aim is not to produce an unusually sharp pattern on the first few pieces. It is to maintain the specified knurl throughout the production run.

This is one of the practical differences between prototype turning and high-volume CNC turning.

Small Diameter, Multiple Turned Features

At approximately 6 mm in diameter, this is a relatively small turned component.

The profile includes smooth cylindrical sections, diameter transitions and knurled areas rather than one continuous outside diameter. These features need to be considered together when planning the turning sequence.

For small-diameter parts, workholding and part rigidity can also influence machining efficiency.

The image appears to show an additional feature near the larger knurled section. Its exact geometry and function cannot be determined from the photograph alone, so any such feature would be machined according to the customer's drawing.

Where a part requires cross holes, flats or other off-axis geometry, CNC turn-mill machining can combine rotational and secondary features in a more integrated process.

Why Aluminum 6061 for Small Turned Hardware?

The specified material is Aluminum 6061, a widely used alloy for custom CNC machined components.

6061 offers good machinability and relatively low weight, making it practical for many equipment and mechanical hardware applications. Its machining characteristics are also useful when producing small turned parts in larger quantities.

For this project, the material needs to support both the smooth turned features and the required knurled sections.

As with any made-to-print component, the alloy follows the customer's drawing. We do not substitute another aluminum grade without approval.

Production Turning Is About More Than Cycle Time

At 30,000 pieces, machining efficiency matters—but reducing cycle time alone is not the goal.

A practical production process also has to consider tool life, part handling, chip control, inspection frequency and the number of setups required.

A typical route for this component may include:

Material Preparation → CNC Turning → Knurling → Secondary Machining if Required → Deburring → Inspection → Cleaning → Packing

Where the geometry allows, combining operations can reduce repeated handling and repositioning.

This is also where CNC turn-mill machining can be useful for components that combine turned features with cross holes, flats or other secondary geometry.

The best production route depends on the complete drawing and quantity.

Checking a Knurled Part Is Different from Checking a Smooth Shaft

Knurling introduces another consideration: the feature can have both dimensional and visual characteristics.

Depending on the drawing, inspection may include the finished knurled diameter, pattern condition, turned diameters, shoulder locations and secondary machined features.

For repeat production, first-piece verification and appropriate in-process checks can help identify changes as tooling wears.

This is particularly useful on a 30,000-piece order. A developing process change is easier to correct during production than after the entire batch has been completed.

Sourcing a CNC Turning Supplier for Production Quantities?

For production projects, a useful quotation starts with more than part size and quantity.

If you are looking for a CNC turning manufacturer or precision machining supplier, send your 2D/3D drawings together with the material, tolerances and annual demand.

For knurled components, it is particularly helpful to specify:

  • Knurl pattern and pitch
  • Knurled length
  • Finished knurled diameter
  • Critical turned dimensions
  • Secondary machined features
  • Surface requirements
  • Batch quantity and annual volume
  • Inspection requirements

These details allow us to evaluate the turning process, knurling requirements and production volume together rather than quoting the part only from its outside dimensions.

Send your drawings to YS Precision for a precision CNC turning and production machining quotation.
