CNC Turning Parts
This 303 stainless steel threaded bushing was produced as part of our custom CNC turning services for an aquaculture equipment customer in the United States.
The component is approximately 65 × 25 mm, with a machined internal bore, stepped outside diameters and a substantial external threaded section. The customer supplied both 2D and 3D files, with a critical +0.02 mm tolerance specified on the internal bore.
Approximately 1,000 pieces were manufactured to the customer's material, geometry and tolerance requirements.
The part itself is not unusually complex. What matters is keeping the bore, thread and turned diameters consistent from the first approved pieces through the production batch.

Looking at the finished part, the external thread is naturally the first feature that stands out.
The engineering drawing tells a slightly different story.
The internal bore carries a +0.02 mm tolerance, so this dimension needs closer control during machining. For a bushing or sleeve, the bore can directly influence how the component locates around a shaft or other mating hardware.
That is why our custom CNC turning work starts with the complete drawing rather than simply looking at the visible geometry.
The 3D model tells us what the part looks like. The 2D drawing tells us which dimensions cannot move very far.
Most of the geometry shares a common centerline, making this a natural CNC lathe part.
The stepped outside diameters and shoulders are turned to profile, the internal bore is machined to its specified size, and the external thread is produced according to the drawing.
A typical route is straightforward:
Bar Stock → CNC Turning → Internal Boring → External Threading → Deburring → Inspection → Packing
There is no advantage in adding secondary milling when the required geometry can be produced efficiently through turning.
For a batch of approximately 1,000 pieces, a short and stable machining route also helps keep production predictable.
Producing one bore to size is one thing. Keeping it there through a production batch is another.
Internal machining takes place in a confined cutting area. Tool condition, chip evacuation and cutting conditions can gradually influence the finished diameter as production continues.
The critical bore is therefore measured at appropriate intervals during the run rather than being left entirely to final inspection.
If a dimensional trend begins to appear, it can be addressed while parts are still being machined.
For precision CNC turned bushings and sleeves, this kind of in-process control is often more useful than adding inspection only after production is finished.
The external thread occupies a substantial section of the component.
Its diameter, pitch, length and transition into the adjacent shoulder are machined according to the customer drawing. The finished thread and nearby edges also need to remain free from burrs or damage that could cause problems during assembly.
Threading itself is a routine CNC turning operation.
The production requirement is to keep that routine operation consistent across approximately 1,000 pieces while the bore and other turned dimensions remain within their own specifications.
The customer specified 303 stainless steel, which is well suited to a part involving external turning, internal boring and threading.
Its machinability makes it practical for repeat CNC lathe work, particularly when material needs to be removed from both the inside and outside of the component.
We manufacture to the material grade stated on the engineering drawing unless an alternative has been reviewed and approved.
For custom stainless steel CNC turning, the material is considered together with the geometry, tolerance requirements and order quantity when planning the machining process.
For this project, the customer supplied both.
The 3D model helps us understand the complete part geometry and review how the features relate to each other. The 2D drawing carries the manufacturing information that should not be assumed from the CAD model alone.
That includes the +0.02 mm bore tolerance, thread specification and other critical dimensional requirements.
This distinction matters when quoting made-to-drawing components. Two bushings can look almost identical in a rendering while requiring very different machining and inspection once their tolerances are compared.
