Product Description

Sheet Metal Prototyping Services for Cold-Rolled Steel Parts

Custom Sheet Metal Prototype with Laser Cutting, Embossing, Bending and Zinc Plating

YS Precision provides sheet metal prototyping services for customers who need functional metal prototypes before mass production.

This project was developed for a customer in the United States. The part was made from cold-rolled steel, with multiple embossed structures, laser-cut openings, precision bends, and zinc plating. The order quantity was around 20 pieces, and the complete project, including prototype tooling, production, surface treatment, and inspection, was completed in two weeks.

Engineering Review Before Production

Before manufacturing, our engineering team reviewed the drawings carefully. The part included many embossed features, so normal laser cutting and bending were not enough.

We checked:

  • Embossing position and height
  • Bend sequence
  • Hole and slot position
  • Forming feasibility
  • Zinc plating requirements
  • Final assembly requirements

This review helped reduce production risk and ensured the prototype was suitable for functional testing.

Prototype Tooling for Embossing

The key challenge of this project was the embossed structure.

Instead of making expensive production dies, we produced simple prototype tooling for the embossing process. This allowed the customer to verify the product design at lower cost before investing in mass-production tooling.

The prototype tooling was used to form:

  • Embossed bosses
  • Reinforced structures
  • Raised features
  • Formed locating areas

For sheet metal prototypes with complex forming features, prototype tooling is often a practical solution.

Laser Cutting, Embossing and CNC Bending

After material preparation, the cold-rolled steel sheets were laser cut according to the customer drawings. Laser cutting ensured clean edges, accurate openings, and stable repeatability for all 20 pieces.

After laser cutting, we used the prototype forming tools to press the embossed features. Our team controlled the forming position and pressure to reduce deformation.

Then the parts were processed by CNC bending. The bending sequence was planned carefully to avoid interference with the embossed areas and maintain the correct final shape.

Zinc Plating Surface Finish

After fabrication, the parts were sent for zinc plating.

Zinc plating provides better corrosion resistance and gives the part a clean, uniform metal finish. For cold-rolled steel prototypes exported to the United States, surface protection is important during shipment, testing, and product validation.

Before shipment, the plated surface was checked for appearance, coverage, and visible defects.

Quality Control and Delivery

Quality control was performed during each major step.

Our inspection included:

  • Material check
  • Laser cutting dimensions
  • Embossing position
  • Bend angle
  • Overall shape
  • Plating appearance
  • Final outgoing inspection

The complete project was finished within two weeks, including simple tooling, production, plating, and packing.
