Project Background

During the product development stage of an electronic equipment project, a customer from the Americas needed a customized internal metal support plate for functional testing and design validation.

The part was designed with multiple embossed reinforcement ribs, ventilation openings, and mounting features to improve structural rigidity and support internal electronic components.

However, the initial requirement was only 30 pieces.

Using a traditional stamping process would require a dedicated stamping die, resulting in significant tooling investment and a longer development cycle.

The customer needed a manufacturing solution that could:

  • Produce functional prototype parts quickly
  • Avoid high upfront tooling costs
  • Maintain the required embossed structures
  • Allow future design modifications

YS Precision provided a low-volume embossed sheet metal manufacturing solution using custom prototype tooling, helping the customer move forward with product validation efficiently.

The Engineering Challenge

Producing Stamped-Like Features Without a Production Stamping Mold

The main challenge was the embossed rib structure.

These reinforcement features were important because they provided:

  • Increased panel stiffness
  • Reduced sheet deformation
  • Improved structural performance
  • Better assembly reliability

Normally, these features would be produced through a dedicated stamping die.

However, for a quantity of only 30 pieces:

  • Tooling cost would be too high
  • Development flexibility would be limited
  • Design changes could create additional expenses

The customer needed a flexible alternative between:

Prototype manufacturing and mass production stamping.

Our Manufacturing Solution

Custom Prototype Tooling for Embossed Sheet Metal Parts

After reviewing the customer's drawings, our engineering team analyzed:

  • Material behavior
  • Embossing depth
  • Rib structure
  • Sheet deformation risks
  • Production feasibility

Instead of investing in a traditional stamping mold, we developed a custom prototype embossing tool designed specifically for this small production batch.

This approach allowed the customer to achieve:

✓ Production-like embossed features
✓ Lower tooling investment
✓ Faster manufacturing preparation
✓ Greater flexibility for future design changes

Manufacturing Process

1. Engineering Review Based on Customer Drawings

The customer provided product drawings.

Before manufacturing, our engineers reviewed the design to confirm:

  • Sheet metal manufacturability
  • Forming feasibility
  • Embossing requirements
  • Surface treatment requirements

Potential manufacturing risks were evaluated before production started.

2. Precision Laser Cutting

Cold rolled steel sheets were laser cut according to the customer's drawings.

Laser cutting provided:

  • Accurate external profiles
  • Precise openings
  • Flexible production for low quantities

3. Embossing with Prototype Tooling

The reinforcement ribs were created using a customized forming tool.

Compared with conventional stamping dies, this prototype tooling method was more suitable for early-stage product development.

The embossed structures improved:

  • Overall stiffness
  • Mechanical strength
  • Long-term reliability

4. Zinc Plating Surface Treatment

After forming, the parts received zinc plating.

The surface treatment provided:

  • Corrosion resistance
  • Improved durability
  • Protection for electronic equipment applications

Prototype Validation Result

The completed sheet metal parts were exported to the Americas for customer testing and assembly validation.

The customer received:

  • 30 finished prototype units
  • Consistent embossed features
  • Assembly-ready components
  • Production-quality surface finish

The project successfully demonstrated that complex embossed sheet metal structures can be manufactured efficiently without investing in expensive stamping tooling during the product development phase.
