Product Description

POM Injection Molding for Automotive Parts | Trial to Batch Production

This POM automotive component is approximately 150 × 60 × 40 mm, with a compact but feature-dense design that includes a cylindrical body, multiple openings, locating features and two parallel connection ports. These interfaces need to maintain the required dimensions and positions so the molded part can fit correctly with mating components.
The project is designed for repeat injection molding production, with approximately 3,000 parts per batch for a customer in the United States. Before regular production begins, trial parts or a smaller initial run can be molded for dimensional inspection, assembly testing and customer evaluation.
YS Precision provides custom plastic injection molding services that continue beyond mold manufacturing—from trial molding and low-volume validation to batch production and repeat orders.

One Injection Molding Supplier from Trial Parts to Production

For a production manager, ordering the mold is only the beginning. The more important question is whether the same supplier can support the component after tooling is completed.
Our plastic injection molding production can follow a staged route:

DFM Review → Injection Mold Manufacturing → Mold Trial → Sample Approval → Small-Batch Validation → 3,000-Piece Production → Repeat Orders
Initial molded parts allow dimensions, fit and functional features to be evaluated before the regular order is released.
If the customer needs additional parts for assembly testing or field evaluation, a small production run can be completed using the same production mold. Once approved, the project can move directly into regular batch manufacturing without transferring the tooling to another supplier.

Complex Geometry Makes Functional Dimensions Important

Although the overall size is only about 150 × 60 × 40 mm, this component contains several functional features within a relatively small area.
The front section has multiple openings of different diameters and local locating structures. Two parallel ports extend from the lower body, while the opposite section transitions into a larger cylindrical form.
For a functional automotive injection molded part, the relationship between these features can be more important than the overall outside dimensions.
Depending on the customer's drawing, inspection may focus on:

  • functional hole diameters;
  • center-to-center dimensions;
  • spacing and position of the two ports;
  • locating features;
  • mating surfaces;
  • relative positions between connection features.

This is why we prefer both 3D CAD and 2D technical drawings. The CAD defines the geometry, while the drawing identifies the dimensions and tolerances that matter most to assembly.

POM Injection Molding and Dimensional Control

POM is commonly selected for automotive and mechanical plastic parts because of its stiffness, wear resistance, low friction and dimensional characteristics.
However, POM injection molding still requires careful process control.
The finished dimensions can be influenced by the specific POM grade, wall thickness, gate location, packing, mold temperature and cooling conditions. On this component, the cylindrical section, local bosses, openings and connection ports create different cross-sections that may not cool and shrink uniformly.
During mold trials, actual molded parts are therefore checked against the customer's drawing.
If a critical dimension needs correction, we first determine whether the variation is related to the molding process or the tooling itself. The objective is to establish a stable process before regular production rather than relying on repeated adjustments during each batch.

Trial and Low-Volume Injection Molding

Customers do not always want to release 3,000 parts immediately after the first mold trial.
For a newly tooled component, we can first provide trial injection molding or low-volume production using the intended production material.
These parts can be used for:
Dimensional Inspection · Assembly Testing · Functional Evaluation · Field Trials · Customer Validation
This is particularly useful when a product is transitioning from CNC-machined or 3D-printed prototypes to injection molded parts.
The customer can evaluate the actual molded geometry and material before committing to the regular production quantity.
If an issue is found at this stage, it can be addressed before it is repeated across thousands of parts.

Moving into 3,000-Piece Batch Production

Once the samples, dimensions and molding conditions are approved, the project moves into approximately 3,000-piece production batches.
The manufacturing priority now changes from development to consistency.
Producing one acceptable T1 sample does not prove that a process is ready for repeat production. The molding conditions need to remain stable, and important dimensions should stay within the customer's drawing requirements throughout the batch.
For this type of batch injection molding, production control can focus on the features that directly affect assembly and function.
This helps carry the approved sample condition into the regular production order.

Repeat Injection Molding for Ongoing Orders

The same approved injection mold can continue to support future orders as demand develops.
Instead of restarting the project with another supplier, the customer can follow one manufacturing route:

Tooling → Trial Parts → Low-Volume Validation → 3,000-Piece Batch → Repeat Production
Previous mold trials and production runs also provide useful reference information for later batches.
For overseas production managers, this continuity can simplify sourcing because the mold, molding process and production history remain connected to the same manufacturing program.
The finished parts for this project are supplied to the United States.

Custom Plastic Injection Molding Services

YS Precision provides custom plastic injection molding services for customer-designed automotive, industrial, electronic and equipment components.
Depending on the stage of your project, we can support:
Injection Mold Tooling — custom molds manufactured from customer 3D CAD and 2D drawings.
Trial Injection Molding — initial molded parts for dimensional, molding and assembly evaluation.
Low-Volume Injection Molding — smaller production quantities for product validation and field testing.
Batch Plastic Parts Production — hundreds or thousands of molded components for regular production requirements.
Repeat Production — subsequent manufacturing using the approved mold and established molding process.
For POM and other engineering plastics, tooling and production requirements are reviewed according to the actual material grade, part geometry, tolerances and application.

What to Send for an Injection Molding Quote

For a new custom injection molding project, please send:
3D CAD + 2D Drawings + Plastic Material/Grade + Trial Quantity + Batch Quantity + Annual Forecast + Critical Tolerances + Assembly Requirements
If the product is still in development, let us know the quantity required for the first validation run and the expected production volume after approval.
This allows us to evaluate the mold and production approach for both the immediate testing requirement and the later batch program.
