Product Description

Custom Acrylic CNC Machining for Complex Transparent Parts

Machining a large transparent acrylic block into a complex mechanical component presents a different challenge from producing simple PMMA panels, windows, or covers.
For this industrial equipment project, YS Precision manufactured approximately 500 custom acrylic parts for a customer in the United States. Each component measures approximately 300 × 200 × 100 mm and is CNC machined from clear PMMA.
As shown in the part geometry, a substantial amount of material must be removed to create the deep internal cavities, long channels, recessed areas, side openings, bores, and multi-level features inside the transparent body.
Because these structures are distributed in different directions, 5-axis CNC machining was used to improve tool access to the internal and side-facing features.
The project also required high transparency, making surface finishing and protection an important part of the manufacturing process.

Machining Deep Features from a Solid Acrylic Block

The distinctive feature of this component is its high material-removal ratio.
Instead of machining a relatively thin acrylic cover, the process starts with thick PMMA stock and removes material from multiple areas to create the final three-dimensional structure.
The component includes:

  • a large circular side opening;
  • deep internal pockets;
  • long recessed channels;
  • rectangular windows;
  • internal steps and shoulders;
  • holes and bores in different orientations;
  • narrow areas with restricted cutter access.

This makes tool reach, chip evacuation, heat control, workholding, and machining sequence important considerations.
Acrylic also needs an appropriate cutting strategy to reduce excessive heat generation and maintain clean machined edges.
For a part of this size and depth, the manufacturing plan must consider the entire machining sequence rather than treating each pocket or opening independently.

5-Axis Machining for Multi-Directional Tool Access

Not every acrylic component needs five-axis machining.
For this design, however, several important features are located on different faces and within recessed areas of the part.
5-axis CNC machining allows the workpiece and cutting tool to approach these features from more suitable orientations, reducing the need to create a separate setup for every machining direction.
This is particularly useful for the large side opening, internal recesses, and features located around the three-dimensional body.
For a production quantity of approximately 500 pieces, an efficient machining strategy also matters commercially. Unnecessary setups and complicated fixture changes repeated hundreds of times can significantly affect production efficiency and manufacturing cost.
This is one reason process planning matters when sourcing complex CNC machined acrylic parts in batch quantities.

High-Transparency PMMA Changes the Manufacturing Priorities

With an opaque plastic part, minor machining marks may have little impact on the final appearance.
Clear PMMA is different.
Cutter marks, scratches, haze, edge defects, and handling damage can remain visible through the transparent component. A part can therefore meet its dimensional requirements while still being unacceptable cosmetically.
For this project, transparency needs to be considered throughout:
Machining → Finishing → Polishing → Cleaning → Appearance Inspection → Protection
The goal is not simply to make a transparent material into the correct shape. It is to maintain the required clarity after extensive machining of a complex three-dimensional component.

Critical Transparency Areas Should Be Defined Before Quotation

One practical issue with complex acrylic parts is that not every machined surface is equally accessible for polishing.
Large external faces are relatively straightforward. Deep internal walls, narrow channels, recessed corners, and enclosed areas can be considerably more difficult to finish.
For this reason, when reviewing an acrylic CNC machining RFQ, we recommend identifying:

  • high-clarity surfaces;
  • cosmetic surfaces;
  • internal surfaces that must remain transparent;
  • acceptable machining marks;
  • critical dimensions;
  • edge appearance requirements.

This information allows the machining and finishing strategy to be evaluated before production.
It can also prevent unnecessary finishing costs on non-critical internal areas while concentrating attention on the surfaces that matter to the final application.

Manufacturing 500 Parts Requires Process Stability

For a sourcing manager, successfully machining the first component is only the beginning.
The real requirement is producing the remaining parts with consistent dimensions and appearance.
For this approximately 500-piece order, batch manufacturing involves control of:
Material → Fixture → Cutting Tools → Machining Parameters → Surface Finish → Inspection → Handling
Tool condition is particularly relevant with transparent PMMA because changes in cutting performance can influence both edge condition and visible surface quality.
Fixture consistency also matters when the same complex machining sequence is repeated across hundreds of components.
This is where batch acrylic CNC production differs from one-off prototype machining.

Protecting Clear Acrylic After Machining

A transparent component can be damaged after all machining and polishing work has already been completed.
Part-to-part contact, inappropriate handling, or insufficient protection during packing can introduce visible scratches.
For this reason, appearance control continues after CNC machining.
Finished components can be inspected for both dimensional and cosmetic requirements and protected appropriately before international shipment.
For transparent parts shipped from China to the United States, packaging is part of maintaining the condition achieved during manufacturing—not simply the final logistics step.
