Plastic CNC Machining
This ABS medical equipment cover was produced by CNC machining in a batch of approximately 50 pieces for customer user testing. The covers were machined from the latest CAD data, sanded, finished in white, and shipped to Norway.
At this stage, the customer needed more than a visual prototype. The covers had to fit the test equipment accurately enough for assembly and user evaluation, while the design was still open to revision.
This made plastic CNC machining a practical choice. The customer could build multiple test units from the current design without committing to production tooling too early.

The customer was beyond the point of needing only one or two concept models. Approximately 50 covers were required so that multiple units could be prepared for user testing.
At the same time, the design had not yet reached the point where production tooling was the obvious next step.
With ABS CNC machining, the covers could be manufactured directly from the current 3D model. If testing identified a change around a mounting feature, mating edge or exterior detail, the CAD data could be revised before the next production stage.
This is where low-volume plastic CNC machining fits particularly well: the quantity is higher than normal prototyping, but the project still benefits from manufacturing without a dedicated mold.
This is a relatively straightforward exterior cover rather than a highly complex mechanical component. Its machining requirements come mainly from how it fits the complete equipment.
The design has a broad upper surface, curved perimeter, side walls and several raised features. While these define the overall appearance, the more important dimensional requirements are typically found around the areas that locate or mate with the surrounding assembly.
Depending on the design, these can include mounting positions, locating features, mating edges and interface dimensions.
CNC machining allows these areas to be produced directly from the customer's CAD data and controlled according to the technical drawing.
For a CNC machined plastic cover, this is generally more useful than assigning an unnecessarily tight tolerance to every exterior surface.
The customer specified ABS for this project.
ABS is widely used for CNC machined plastic prototypes, covers and housings because it machines well and can be sanded and finished afterward when a more complete appearance is required.
For these parts, machining established the geometry first. The covers were then sanded to prepare the visible surfaces before receiving the specified white finish.
This combination allowed the customer to evaluate both sides of the prototype:
Does the cover fit the equipment correctly?
and
Does the assembled product look and feel appropriate for user testing?
Those questions are more useful at this stage than simply producing a rough representation of the exterior shape.
A machined appearance component is not necessarily ready for user evaluation as soon as it comes off the CNC machine.
Broad exterior surfaces can retain cutter marks or transitions from different machining areas. These need appropriate surface preparation before painting.
For this batch, sanding was completed after machining, followed by the required white finish.
The purpose was not simply cosmetic. Because the covers were being installed on test units, the customer wanted parts that were reasonably representative of the intended product when users handled and viewed the equipment.
For custom plastic housings and covers, machining and finishing therefore need to be considered as two parts of the same prototype manufacturing process.
Producing one good cover and producing 50 covers are slightly different manufacturing tasks.
Once the quantity moves beyond a few prototypes, repeatability becomes more important. The parts need to fit the same equipment design, and visible components should have reasonable consistency across the batch.
This applies to both CNC machining and the subsequent surface finishing.
The objective is not mass-production economics. It is to provide a controlled batch that allows the customer to test the current product revision before making a larger tooling commitment.
If user feedback leads to changes, the CAD model can be updated. If the design is confirmed, the project can then progress toward production with more confidence.
