Plastic CNC Machining
A gaming controller housing is more than an outer plastic shell. Its shape affects how the product feels in the user's hands, while the openings across the front need to match joysticks, buttons and other internal control components.
For this project, we CNC machined approximately 50 custom gaming controller housings from ABS, each measuring about 200 × 100 mm. The parts were produced for a customer in the United States as part of a consumer electronics development project.
The housing features two curved grip areas, a contoured front surface and multiple openings of different sizes for the controller functions. After machining, the ABS surfaces were prepared for several appearance versions, including black, blue and red.
For this development quantity, plastic CNC machining provided physical housings that could be used to check ergonomics, component fit and overall product appearance before the design moved to higher-volume manufacturing.

The geometry of this part is driven by the way the controller is held.
Both sides extend into rounded grips, with smooth transitions into the central control area. Unlike a conventional plastic enclosure built mainly from flat walls, much of this housing is defined by continuous 3D contours.
For CNC machining, these surfaces need to follow the customer's CAD geometry closely. They also need a suitable machining and finishing approach because the exterior will be directly visible and touched by the user.
A physical CNC machined ABS housing gives the development team something that a rendering cannot provide: the ability to hold the actual geometry and judge whether the grip width, curvature and overall proportions feel right.
For gaming hardware and other handheld products, this can be an important step before tooling.
The front housing contains multiple openings rather than one simple cutout.
Larger circular areas can accommodate joystick assemblies, while smaller openings are arranged for buttons and directional controls. Their exact function is determined by the customer's controller design.
What matters during manufacturing is their relationship to the components behind the housing.
Opening position, diameter, spacing and local clearance can affect how the controls fit and move after assembly. A housing may look correct externally but still require adjustment if an internal component interferes with the surrounding plastic.
For this reason, ABS CNC machining for controller housings should follow both the 3D CAD model and the critical dimensions identified on the technical drawing.
ABS is commonly used for consumer electronics housings and is also a practical material for CNC machined prototypes and development parts.
For this project, the housing needs to represent more than basic size and shape. It is an external component, so the curved surfaces, edges and control openings all contribute to the finished product appearance.
After CNC machining, the surfaces are carefully prepared to remove machining marks before the required appearance finish is applied.
The customer requested several versions in black, blue and red, making it possible to evaluate the same controller design in different visual configurations.
This combination of dimensional evaluation and appearance review is one reason CNC machining ABS plastic is widely used during consumer product development.
The quantity for this project was approximately 50 housings.
That is significantly more than a one-off visual prototype, but still represents a relatively small production requirement compared with mass-produced gaming hardware.
A batch at this stage can support engineering builds, assembly evaluation, functional testing, internal review or product demonstrations.
CNC machining also allows the housings to be produced from the current design revision. If evaluation identifies a change to a button opening, grip contour or mating feature, that feedback can be incorporated before production tooling is finalized.
This makes low-volume plastic CNC machining useful for product development programs that have progressed beyond the first prototype but are not yet ready for high-volume manufacturing.
A useful manufacturing review for a part like this is not simply a check of the overall 200 × 100 mm dimensions.
We look at the features that influence how the housing will actually be used and assembled, including:
This helps keep attention on the functional areas of the part rather than applying the same machining requirements to every surface.
YS Precision provides plastic CNC machining services for customer-designed consumer electronics and product-development components.
In addition to gaming controller housings, CNC machined plastic parts can include handheld device enclosures, control panels, faceplates, covers, internal components and other custom plastic parts.
Materials include ABS, PC, POM/Delrin, Nylon, PMMA, PEEK, PEI and PTFE, selected according to the customer's drawing and application requirements.
Projects can range from individual prototypes to low-volume production batches.
