Custom 303 Stainless Steel Threaded Shaft for Electronic Equipment

A standard M4 threaded rod would not work for this component.

This custom 303 stainless steel threaded shaft is manufactured for electronic equipment and supplied to a customer in Israel. The part is approximately 50 mm long, with a multi-step profile at one end, a long smooth shaft through the center and an M4 external thread at the opposite end.

Production quantity is approximately 10,000 pieces per batch.

Although the M4 thread provides the fastening feature, most of the component is actually custom turned geometry. Shaft diameters, shoulder positions, unthreaded length and thread length all follow the customer's engineering drawing.

This is where precision CNC turning becomes useful: the complete shaft can be manufactured around the assembly requirements rather than adapting a standard fastener.

This is a made-to-drawing CNC turned shaft, not an off-the-shelf threaded rod. The complete geometry is machined according to the customer's drawing and functional requirements.

 


 

Why This Is a Threaded Shaft, Not a Standard Fastener

The geometry tells the story.

Starting from one end, the part contains several larger turned diameters and defined shoulders. These transition into a long, smaller-diameter smooth shaft before reaching the localized M4 thread.

The component can be viewed as three functional areas:

Stepped End → Slender Shaft → M4 Threaded End

Depending on the assembly, the stepped section may provide locating, seating or spacing functions. The smooth center section provides the required shaft geometry, while only the final section provides threaded engagement.

This combination makes the part a good candidate for custom CNC lathe machining rather than modification of a standard M4 fastener.

 


 

The Slender Shaft Is the Feature We Watch Closely

The M4 thread is visually obvious, but the long smooth section can be more important from a machining perspective.

A slender shaft has less rigidity than a short turned component. Cutting forces can cause temporary deflection while the tool is engaged, potentially influencing diameter, straightness or surface condition.

Depending on the actual shaft diameter and drawing tolerances, the machining plan may need to consider workholding, tool geometry, cutting depth, cutting parameters and additional support where appropriate.

This is why precision shaft turning is not simply a matter of programming the nominal profile.

The process has to suit the physical geometry of the component.

 


 

Multiple Shoulders, One Turning Axis

The stepped end contains several changes in diameter within a relatively short distance.

These rotational features are well suited to CNC turning, where the different diameters and shoulders can be established around the same shaft axis.

For the customer, however, individual diameters may not tell the whole story.

Shoulder positions and axial distances can influence how the shaft locates or seats within the electronic assembly. These relationships are therefore manufactured according to the drawing rather than standard shaft dimensions.

For a made-to-drawing component, this is an important distinction: the complete profile is functional geometry, not just a series of turned diameters.

 


 

Machining the M4 External Thread

Only the end section of the shaft carries an M4 external thread.

The thread needs to transition correctly from the smooth shaft while meeting the thread length and specification defined on the drawing.

During a 10,000-piece production run, threading tool condition also matters. Tool wear develops gradually, so the process needs to remain suitable beyond the first few parts.

Where required by the customer's inspection requirements, appropriate methods can be used to verify the external thread.

Ultimately, the requirement is practical: the threaded end needs to engage correctly with the mating component during assembly.

 


 

Why 303 Stainless Steel?

The specified material for this shaft is 303 stainless steel.

303 is commonly used for precision machined components because it offers improved machinability compared with many other austenitic stainless steels. This is useful for a part combining several turned diameters, a relatively long shaft section and external threading.

At approximately 10,000 pieces per batch, machinability can also influence tool life and production efficiency.

Material selection still follows the customer's application requirements. We do not treat 303, 304 or other stainless steel grades as interchangeable simply because they belong to the same material family.

 


 

From the First Shaft to the 10,000th

Producing one acceptable shaft proves the geometry can be machined. Production introduces a different requirement: the process needs to remain repeatable.

A typical manufacturing route may include:

Material Preparation → CNC Turning → Shaft Finishing → M4 External Threading → Deburring → Inspection → Cleaning → Packing

Depending on the drawing and project requirements, production control can include first-piece verification, in-process inspection and outgoing inspection.

For a threaded shaft like this, inspection can focus on the features that matter to function—such as selected shaft diameters, shoulder locations, overall geometry and thread requirements.

The purpose is to identify process changes while machining is underway rather than after the complete batch has been finished.
