Plastic CNC Machining
For an exhibition prototype, a plastic cover has to do more than match the CAD model. Once installed, it becomes part of the product that customers and visitors actually see.
For this electronic product project, the customer needed 15 custom covers CNC machined from PC (Polycarbonate). The cover has a broad visible surface with four circular openings and two larger rectangular openings, all positioned within the main appearance area.
After CNC machining, the parts required careful sanding, surface preparation and white painting. Because the covers would be installed on exhibition units, the quality of the visible surfaces was an important part of the manufacturing requirement.
The complete project—from CNC machining through finishing and inspection—was planned around an approximately two-week lead time before shipment to the United States.

The geometry of this cover is not extremely complex. The challenge comes from how the finished part will be used.
Unlike an internal bracket or hidden plastic component, this cover remains visible after assembly. Its broad exterior surface, curved transitions, opening edges and white finish all contribute to the appearance of the final electronic product.
Producing the correct geometry is therefore only the first step.
The machined PC surfaces also need to provide a suitable foundation for the sanding and painting operations that follow. Tool marks, rough transitions or unnecessary surface damage can create additional finishing work later.
For CNC machined plastic appearance parts, machining quality and finishing quality are closely connected.
The design includes four circular openings on one side and two larger rectangular openings on the other.
Although these are functional features, they are also positioned directly within the main viewing surface. Their location and geometry need to follow the customer's CAD data, while the surrounding edges need to remain suitable for subsequent finishing.
A dimensionally correct opening can still affect the final appearance if cutter marks, rough edges or uneven transitions remain visible after painting.
This is one of the practical differences between machining a hidden engineering component and CNC machining an electronic plastic enclosure that will become part of the finished product exterior.
PC, or polycarbonate, is commonly used for electronic covers and housings where toughness and impact resistance are useful.
For prototype and low-volume requirements, PC can be CNC machined directly from customer CAD data to produce functional enclosure components without first committing to production tooling.
The quantity for this project was only 15 pieces.
This allowed the customer to obtain physical covers from the current design, complete the required appearance finishing and install them on the exhibition units.
Similar low-volume plastic CNC machining projects may include electronic product prototypes, presentation models, design verification builds and pre-production housings where relatively small quantities of functional plastic parts are required.
The final white appearance does not begin in the paint room. It begins with the condition of the machined plastic surface.
Painting does not automatically hide CNC tool paths, sanding scratches or uneven transitions. In some cases, a uniform coating can make defects underneath more noticeable.
After machining, the PC covers therefore required careful sanding and surface preparation before the white finish was applied.
Particular attention was given to the main viewing surfaces, curved transitions and areas around the functional openings.
Hidden areas do not necessarily require the same cosmetic treatment. Finishing effort can instead follow the customer's actual appearance requirements and the way each surface will be seen on the assembled product.
A painted electronic cover cannot be evaluated only with measuring equipment.
Dimensions can be checked against the drawing. Appearance also needs to be visually reviewed.

For an exhibition prototype, this step is particularly important because the customer may have limited time available for rework after the parts arrive.
The objective is practical: the covers should arrive ready for installation on the display units.
A requirement for 15 CNC machined covers within approximately two weeks is not simply a question of CNC machine availability.
The complete manufacturing route includes:
CAD Review → CNC Machining → Sanding → Surface Preparation → White Painting → Cosmetic Inspection → Packing
Each stage uses part of the available schedule.
If machining runs late, the finishing window becomes shorter. If surface preparation is rushed, cosmetic defects may appear after painting. If a painted component requires rework, the shipment schedule can be affected.
For an exhibition project, the required delivery date is usually tied to a fixed event. Planning therefore needs to consider the entire manufacturing route rather than CNC machining time alone.
Appearance quality can still be lost after the parts have passed inspection.
Painted white surfaces can show scratches, rubbing marks or contamination during handling and transportation. Once the covers have been finished and visually approved, appropriate handling and packing are needed to protect the visible surfaces.
This is particularly important for exhibition components that may be installed shortly after delivery.
The manufacturing process is not really complete until the finished appearance parts are protected for shipment.
