Four Features Define This Small Turned Component

The part is only about 30 mm long, but four features shape the machining strategy.
The cylindrical body establishes the main turned geometry.
The wider bottom flange creates a shoulder and a larger seating surface.
The axial opening adds an internal machining feature along the turning axis.
The M3 side thread introduces a second machining direction.
Looking at these features together is more useful than treating the part as a simple cylindrical blank.

The Flange May Be More Important Than It Looks

The M3 Side Thread Requires a Second Machining Direction

The transverse M3 threaded hole changes the process.
It cannot be produced by conventional turning alone because its axis is perpendicular to the main body. After the rotational features are established, the side hole requires drilling and tapping.
Depending on the production setup, this can be completed with suitable driven tooling or through a planned secondary operation.
For a 10,000-piece order, the process needs to keep the thread consistent without creating unnecessary handling.
The pilot hole, tapping parameters, chip removal and tap condition all influence the finished thread.

Stainless Steel Needs Different Process Control Than Aluminum or Brass

This project also has a different machining character from the aluminum and brass turned parts we manufacture.
Stainless steel generally creates higher cutting loads and requires more attention to cutting conditions and tool wear than free-machining brass or aluminum.
That matters when the batch reaches approximately 10,000 pieces.
Tool condition can influence dimensions, edge quality and machined surface condition as production continues. Cutting parameters and tooling therefore need to be suitable not only for producing the first part, but for maintaining a stable process throughout the run.
For stainless steel CNC turning, repeatability depends on controlling the machining process as tooling accumulates cutting time.
 


 

M3 Threading Also Brings Burr Control Into the Process

The side hole is small, but the edges around it still matter.
Drilling and tapping through the cylindrical body can leave burrs or sharp edges at the hole entrance. These may interfere with screw engagement, handling or assembly even when the main turned dimensions are correct.
Deburring is therefore considered part of the manufacturing route.
The aim is to remove unwanted edges while avoiding excessive manual finishing around the threaded feature.
For 10,000 pieces, this finishing operation also needs to be consistent rather than dependent on individual manual judgment from part to part.
 


 

Production Parts Need to Arrive Ready for the Next Operation

For a production buyer, dimensional inspection is only part of the requirement.
A component can measure correctly and still create problems if a thread is difficult to engage, a burr remains around a side hole, or a functional seating surface is damaged during handling.
