Custom CNC Turned Parts We Manufacture
![]()
Our precision CNC turning service is used for parts that depend on accurate diameters, controlled threads, concentric features, smooth surfaces, or repeatable assembly fits.
Shafts and Precision Pins
We manufacture straight and stepped shafts, threaded shafts, locating pins, pivot pins, and other cylindrical components.
Important requirements may include outside diameter, straightness, shoulder position, thread fit, runout, and surface roughness. Long or slender shafts also require suitable support to limit deflection during machining.
Bushings and Sleeves
Bushings and sleeves often depend on the relationship between their inside and outside diameters. Bearing fits, sliding surfaces, wall thickness, concentricity, and surface finish may all affect assembly and movement.
These components can be produced in stainless steel, brass, aluminum, steel, POM, PTFE, PEEK, and other drawing-specified materials.
Threaded Parts and Connectors
We manufacture fittings, adapters, standoffs, threaded inserts, nozzles, collars, and electrical or mechanical connectors.
Internal and external threads are reviewed together with mating parts, plating thickness, sealing surfaces, and installation requirements.
Small Contact Components
Swiss-type turning is suitable for small brass and copper parts such as contact pins, terminals, sensor components, and miniature connectors.
These parts may combine small diameters, stepped profiles, tiny holes, fine threads, strict burr-control requirements, and plated surfaces.
Choosing the Right CNC Turning Process
Different part structures require different production methods.
Conventional CNC Turning
CNC lathes are used for rotational components with stepped diameters, internal bores, shoulders, grooves, tapers, threads, chamfers, and precision end faces.
The process is suitable for a wide range of shafts, bushings, sleeves, fittings, connectors, and cylindrical housings.

Swiss-Type CNC Turning
Swiss-type machining is well suited to small-diameter and slender parts. The material is supported close to the cutting area, helping limit deflection during machining.
YS Precision has produced micro brass parts with outside diameters around 2 mm, as well as slender shafts and contact pins with controlled diameters, fine features, and plating requirements.
For production batches, tool condition and critical dimensions are checked during machining to control part-to-part variation.

Turn-Mill Machining
Some rotational parts also require cross holes, flats, side slots, keyways, or off-center features.
Turn-mill machining combines turning and milling within one coordinated process. Reducing transfers between separate machines helps maintain the relationship between the main turned diameter and additional milled features.
This process is useful for automation shafts, aerospace components, instrument fittings, medical equipment parts, and precision mechanical connectors.

Engineering Review Before Production
A turned part may appear simple, but small differences in diameter, runout, thread engagement, or shoulder position can prevent it from fitting or functioning correctly.
Before machining, our technical team reviews:
- Critical outside and inside diameters
- Shaft, hole, and bearing fits
- Concentricity and runout requirements
- Thread type, pitch, and fit
- Shoulder positions and overall length
- Surface roughness
- Thin walls and slender sections
- Cross holes, flats, and milled features
- Surface-treatment allowance
- Inspection requirements
This review helps determine the appropriate equipment, bar stock, workholding method, cutting tools, and machining sequence.
If we identify an unclear tolerance, an unusual thread requirement, or a possible conflict between a precision feature and surface treatment, we discuss it with the customer before machining begins.
CNC Turning Tolerances and Surface Finish
Our general CNC turning capability can commonly achieve tolerances around ±0.01 mm. Selected critical features may reach ±0.005 mm when the material, geometry, part size, machining conditions, and inspection method allow.
Turning-specific requirements may include:
- Outside and inside diameter tolerances
- Hole-to-shaft fits
- Concentricity between multiple diameters
- Runout of rotating surfaces
- Straightness of long shafts
- Shoulder positions
- Internal and external thread fit
- Surface roughness
- Position of cross holes and milled flats
Bearing, sliding, shaft, and sealing surfaces may require a controlled finish such as Ra 1.6 or another drawing-specified value.
We recommend clearly identifying the dimensions that directly affect assembly, movement, sealing, electrical contact, or interchangeability. Applying unnecessarily tight tolerances across the complete drawing can increase production costs without improving part performance.

Materials for CNC Turned Parts
| Material group | Common options |
| Aluminum | 6061-T6, 6082, 7075 |
| Stainless steel | 303, 304, 316 |
| Steel | Mild steel, 45# steel, selected alloy steels |
| Copper alloys | Brass and copper |
| Engineering plastics | POM, PA, PC, PTFE, PEEK, PEI |
| Other materials | Titanium and application-specific alloys |
Material behavior affects tool selection, cutting parameters, surface finish, burr formation, and dimensional stability.
Stainless steel requires suitable cutting conditions to manage heat, work hardening, and tool wear. Brass and copper are commonly used for fittings and electrical contact parts, although small holes and fine threads still require careful burr control.
Engineering plastics require attention to cutting heat, internal stress, and dimensional movement, particularly when machining thin-wall bushings and precision sleeves.
Experience with Different Turning Requirements
Our CNC turning work covers small contact pins, shafts, bushings, threaded parts, connectors, and components with additional milled features. These parts may require different approaches to diameter control, thread machining, burr removal, surface finishing, and batch inspection.
We develop the machining and inspection process according to the material, geometry, functional requirements, and production quantity of each part.
From Prototyping to Volume Production
New custom turned parts often begin with prototypes or first articles. These initial components allow customers to check fit, movement, thread engagement, surface finish, and assembly before approving production.
Our typical project process includes:
1. Drawing and CAD review
2. Material and machining confirmation
3. Prototype or first-article production
4. Dimensional and appearance inspection
5. Customer testing and drawing updates
6. Low-volume or pilot production
7. Volume production
Proven tooling, machining parameters, inspection points, finishing requirements, and packaging details can be carried forward as the production quantity increases.
Important dimensions are checked at suitable intervals during machining instead of waiting until the entire batch is complete. This helps identify tool wear or dimensional movement before it affects a large number of parts.

Secondary Operations and Surface Finishing
Custom CNC turned parts can be supplied with additional operations and finishes, including:
- Cross drilling and milling
- Tapping and thread finishing
- Knurling
- Grinding
- Gear cutting for suitable parts
- Clear, black, colored, and hard-coat anodizing
- Passivation
- Zinc, nickel, chrome, and gold plating
- Polishing and bead blasting
- Laser marking
Surface treatment is considered during the drawing review because anodizing and plating can affect precision diameters, holes, threads, electrical contacts, and mating surfaces. These areas may require masking or dimensional compensation.
For visible or easily damaged parts, individual separation and protective packaging can help reduce scratches during finishing and international transportation.

Inspection of CNC Turned Components
Depending on the drawing and application, inspection can include:
- Incoming material verification
- First-piece inspection
- In-process diameter and length checks
- Micrometer and caliper measurement
- Thread gauge inspection
- Pin and plug gauge inspection
- Surface roughness checks when specified
- Appearance inspection after finishing
- Final inspection before shipment
- Inspection reports when required
The measurement method is selected according to the feature being inspected. For related parts manufactured together, we can also perform fit checks before shipment when the necessary mating components are available.
For ongoing production, approved drawings and important manufacturing information are maintained to support consistency between batches.
