For a two-piece electronic enclosure, geometric complexity is not always the main challenge. During product development, engineers often need to verify whether the upper and lower housings align correctly, mating edges close properly, mounting features correspond, and sufficient internal clearance remains after assembly.
For this electronic equipment project, YS Precision manufactured approximately 20 sets of plastic enclosure prototypes for a customer in France.
Each enclosure measured approximately 400 × 200 mm and consisted of matching upper and lower covers. The parts were produced by vacuum casting using an ABS-like polyurethane resin. After casting, the mating housings were checked together for fit and alignment, then surface-prepared and finished with matte black paint.
The project provided the customer with complete enclosure assemblies for product evaluation rather than individual prototype parts.

This electronic enclosure prototype consists of two mating housing components.
The front cover incorporates several functional openings and broad exterior surfaces. The rear housing includes mounting bosses, locating structures, attachment points, and perimeter features that interact with the opposite cover.
Although the individual parts are relatively straightforward, their dimensional relationship matters when the complete enclosure is assembled.
Physical prototypes allow product development engineers to evaluate:
Producing both mating parts together makes it possible to evaluate the complete plastic housing assembly, rather than inspecting each component independently.
The customer required approximately 20 complete housing sets.
For this development quantity, our vacuum casting service provided a practical manufacturing route for producing repeated rigid plastic enclosures using silicone tooling.
Master patterns for the upper and lower covers were manufactured and carefully finished before silicone molds were prepared. The required parts were then reproduced using ABS-like polyurethane casting resin.
Vacuum casting was suitable for this project because it combined:
20 Sets + 400 × 200 mm Parts + Two Mating Covers + ABS-Like Material + Painted Finish
The process also allowed multiple enclosure assemblies to be produced while the product remained in the development and verification stage.
For engineers sourcing low-volume plastic parts, process selection should consider quantity together with part size, material, mating features, critical dimensions, surface requirements, and future production plans.
An ABS-like polyurethane resin was selected for these prototype enclosures.
This type of rigid casting material is commonly used for development parts such as:
For this project, the ABS-like resin provided rigid physical parts suitable for fit checks, assembly evaluation, handling, and appearance review.
ABS-like polyurethane is a casting resin designed to simulate certain characteristics of ABS; it is not identical to production injection-molded ABS.
If final-product testing requires specific flame ratings, electrical properties, temperature resistance, or other production-material performance, the specified production material should be evaluated separately.
One of the key requirements of this project was actual assembly between the two vacuum cast parts.
With a two-piece plastic enclosure, small dimensional variations around mating edges, locating features, mounting bosses, or perimeter geometry can affect how the complete housing closes and aligns.
The upper and lower covers were therefore evaluated as mating components.
Key areas included:
Mating Edges → Locating Features → Mounting Points → Functional Openings → Overall Housing Alignment
This type of prototype fit check helps product development teams identify potential clearance, interference, or alignment issues before the design moves further toward production.
For enclosure projects, evaluating the assembled housing can provide more useful engineering feedback than checking individual parts alone.
After casting and fit evaluation, the enclosure parts were prepared for a matte black painted finish.
Because the housing contains relatively large visible surfaces, surface preparation is important for achieving a consistent appearance. Trimming areas and local imperfections are addressed before painting.
The finished assembly allows the customer to review both the mechanical relationship between the two covers and the intended exterior appearance of the electronic equipment.
This makes the prototypes useful for both engineering evaluation and product design review.
YS Precision provides vacuum casting services and low-volume plastic manufacturing for product development teams requiring custom enclosure prototypes and small-batch plastic components.
