CNC Gear Hobbing
Industrial equipment often requires gears built around a specific shaft, gearbox or transmission layout. When standard gears cannot match the required bore, hub geometry, tooth parameters or material condition, the part needs to be manufactured directly from the engineering drawing.
This project involves a custom carbon steel spur gear for industrial equipment. The gear is made from 45# carbon steel and features external straight teeth, a large center bore and an integrated raised hub. Tooth parameters, dimensions and tolerances are defined by the customer's 2D drawing.
The gears are produced for a U.S. customer, with approximately 3,000 pieces required. In addition to blank machining and gear hobbing, the parts require quenching heat treatment, making the control of dimensional changes after heat treatment an important part of the production process.

The raised center hub is one of the defining features of this component.
Compared with a flat spur gear, the additional material around the bore creates a more substantial shaft interface. This means several related dimensions need to be considered together, including the center bore, hub diameter, hub length and gear width.
The relationship between these features can be just as important as the external teeth.
Where the drawing specifies bore tolerances, runout, concentricity or other functional requirements, they need to be controlled relative to the rotational axis of the gear.
For an industrial transmission component, producing the correct tooth profile is only part of the job. The finished gear must also locate correctly on the shaft and fit the surrounding assembly.
This is a non-standard component manufactured according to the customer's engineering specifications rather than a modified catalog gear.
Gear parameters such as module, tooth count, pressure angle and gear width follow the 2D drawing. The same applies to the bore, hub dimensions and critical tolerances.
This drawing-based approach is particularly useful for replacement gears, custom machinery and transmission systems where a standard component cannot satisfy the required combination of tooth geometry and shaft connection.
The manufacturing process is therefore built around the customer's design—not the other way around.
Production begins with preparation of the carbon steel blank.
Before the teeth are cut, machining establishes the basic component geometry, including the faces, center bore and raised hub. The external spur teeth are then produced according to the specified gear parameters.
A typical manufacturing route can include:
45# Carbon Steel → Gear Blank Machining → Bore & Hub Machining → Gear Hobbing → Deburring → Quenching → Final Inspection
The exact sequence depends on the drawing, hardness requirement and final dimensional tolerances.
For some designs, additional finishing may be required after heat treatment. This needs to be considered before production rather than treating machining and quenching as unrelated operations.
For this project, quenching is a functional heat-treatment requirement, not simply a surface finish.
The process changes the mechanical properties of the carbon steel and is carried out according to the required hardness and service conditions specified by the customer.
Heat treatment can also introduce distortion or dimensional change.
This is especially relevant to a hubbed gear because the finished component combines a center bore, raised hub and external tooth geometry around the same rotational axis.
A dimension that is acceptable before quenching still needs to satisfy the final drawing requirements after heat treatment.
For that reason, the manufacturing plan needs to consider which features are completed before quenching, which dimensions require final verification afterward, and whether any post-heat-treatment finishing is specified.
This is an important part of producing heat-treated carbon steel gears for functional transmission applications.
45# carbon steel is widely used for mechanical parts such as gears, shafts and other transmission components.
It offers a practical combination of machinability and mechanical strength and can be heat treated when the application requires increased hardness.
For this project, the material is manufactured according to the customer's specified grade and heat-treatment requirements.
Material selection should still be considered together with the actual operating conditions of the gear, including load, speed, lubrication, mating components and required hardness.
We therefore follow the material and heat-treatment specifications on the engineering drawing rather than applying the same condition to every steel gear.
For a production order, making the first acceptable gear is only the beginning.
Once the blank machining and gear hobbing setups are established, the process needs to remain stable as production continues.
In-process inspection can monitor important dimensions before the complete batch is finished. After quenching, the specified hardness and final functional dimensions can be verified according to the customer's inspection requirements.
Depending on the drawing, checks can include:
For this project, approximately 3,000 gears are required, making repeatability and process control important throughout production.
YS Precision provides custom steel gear manufacturing services for industrial equipment and mechanical transmission applications.
Depending on the component design, the manufacturing route can combine:
CNC Turning · Gear Blank Machining · Bore & Hub Machining · Gear Hobbing · Heat Treatment · Deburring · Dimensional Inspection
This allows the complete gear to be produced around the customer's material, shaft interface, tooth geometry, heat-treatment condition and dimensional requirements.
We support custom carbon steel gears, spur gears and other non-standard transmission components based on customer engineering drawings, from initial production to repeat orders.
